What is Lactose Intolerance? Lactose is the natural sugar found in milk and milk products. Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency or lack of the enzyme LACTASE, which is necessary to digest lactose. It’s probably the most common food intolerance of all. Infants often become lactose intolerant after a bout of gastroenteritis. Symptoms in an infant can include foamy diarrhoea with nappy or diaper rash, slow weight gain and development, and vomiting. In adults the symptoms usually begin between half an hour and two hours after eating lactose and can include bloating, gas, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Experts believe that 75% of the adult population worldwide does not produce enough lactase and is at risk for some or all of the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Many people with lactose intolerance don't even know they have the condition, while some may be misunderstanding the condition as having a serious bowel disease.

Diet Advice for Lactose Intolerant persons: When following a lactose-free diet, it is necessary to read food labels for hidden sources of lactose such as whey, milk solids, dry milk powder etc. Since milk and milk products are a major source of calcium, protein and Vitamin B12, particularly for Vegetarians, please check with your physician or dietician regarding supplementing the same either through other foods or through dietary supplements.
